Focus on Arlington

Largely developed in the 1960s and 1970s, Arlington has seen a recent resurgence in interest due to its affordability and great central location. Connected to Downtown by the Matthews Bridge, Arlington saw a tremendous amount of development in the second half of the 20th century when suburban neighborhoods became all the rage. Comprising a large area, Arlington stretches from the St. Johns River on the west and north, the Arlington River on the south, and I-295 on the east. The area is home to the region’s largest private college, Jacksonville University, and features large parks, boating access, local schools, and affordable housing.

Most homes in the area are concrete block or brick construction and showcase a mid-century modern design that is popular now. Comfortable lot sizes and well-designed roadways make Arlington a place that many Jacksonville residents like to call home. Prices typically average under $250K with shopping and interstate access nearby.

In recent years there has been a push by Arlington residents to maintain the mid-century modern feel of the homes in the area by launching a preservation society. Concerned residents want to distinguish Arlington as unique in the region by its architecture and proximity to downtown. This local movement has also spurred roadway improvements, civic ventures, public-private partnerships and improvements to some of the areas many parks. Additionally, the preservation of Arlington’s own historic Norman Studios has gained traction in the past few years. The site was one of the first African American film studios in the country and one of the only left standing.
